Wiley Elementary students, staff, and parents believe in the importance of working together to support student success and academic achievement. Establishing effective communication is a priority. Parents are recognized as having a significant role in their child’s education. Activities are planned and implemented to support parents in this role.

The Coyote Book Exchange is sponsored by the Wiley PTA. Please support us by sending gently-used books to school. We would appreciate donations of books that are in good shape and of interest to children, ages 1-12.

Parents Visiting Classrooms

Parents are encouraged to visit their children’s classrooms. Please call the office to let us know that you plan to visit, or set up a time directly with your child’s teacher.

Reminder: ALL school visitors must sign in at the office upon arrival, wear a visitor’s badge, and sign out prior to leaving the building.

Attendance

Classes begin at 8:10 a.m. and end at 3:00 p.m. We will not have supervision if your child arrives before 7:50 a.m. When students arrive they should go to the playground area. Students are encouraged to play on the playground until the bell rings. On rainy days, students may line up inside of the building in the hallway next to their classroom. If school should be canceled because of inclement weather, the local television, radio stations, and the School Messenger system will broadcast that information.

All students are expected to attend school every day unless they are ill. Students must be at school by 8:10a.m. to avoid being marked tardy. If a child must miss a day of school, the parent/guardian must notify the school office (384-3670) between 7:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. on the day of the absence or anytime before the day of absence. It is imperative to inform us of the reason for the student’s absence to ensure the safety of our students.

Parents have a legal responsibility to ensure that their students attend school regularly. The school has a legal obligation to notify the authorities if parents do not fulfill their legal responsibility. All absences must be accounted to the state government.

Excused absences:
● Illness, doctor’s appointment, or hospitalization*
● Religious Holidays
● Funerals

*You may be asked to provide documentation from a doctor if your child is continuously absent due to illness.

Unexcused Absences:

The maximum number of absences allowed in a semester is eight (8). After a child has accumulated eight (8) excused absences, all other absences will be considered unexcused absences unless the student can provide a verified doctor’s statement. Student exceeding five (5) unexcused absences per semester will be reported to the Regional Superintendent as chronically truant.

Leaving School Before Dismissal

Parents need to call the school office (384-3670) if they wish a child to be excused early from school for doctor or dental appointments, or other specific reasons. Parents must come into the office to sign out their child and be prepared to show a photo ID. We can only release the child to people you have listed during registration. Please be sure to list everyone who is able to pick up your child from school. This is for your child’s safety and for our attendance information. Because the entire school day is utilized to instruct students, we ask that all parents refrain from picking up students before the 3:00 dismissal.

Arrival and Dismissal Traffic Patterns

Morning Arrival & Dismissal Procedures
Anderson Street is a North-bound One-Way Street from 7:30-8:30 and 2:30-3:30
Drivers should pull forward into the drop off lane as far up as possible
Students must enter and exit on the passenger side of the car
Drivers who want to enter the building should use the legal parking spaces
Please do not park in the drop off lane
Parents who wish to meet their child at dismissal are asked to wait in the front entrance.

Building Access

Enter only by the main door. Ring the door buzzer- which is monitored through a video phone system. You will hear the sound of the release of the door latch. Upon the latch being released, you may then open the entry door. Please proceed directly to the office to sign in and get a visitor badge.

Emergency Information

School Delays and Closures

In the event that severe weather develops during the school day, school officials will be in direct contact with Civil Defense authorities. School dismissal will be at the regular time, unless we are all advised otherwise. Parents should be alert to the development of severe weather conditions and should listen to local television and radio stations to determine if there will be an early school dismissal.

Parents- please make a plan of action in advance about what your children are to do in the event of an early school dismissal. Make a back up plan too. You should give the plan to your child’s teacher along with the names and phone numbers of anyone you may designate to assist during an early dismissal.

If weather conditions become severe, due to snow, ice, heat, etc., parents are advised to check any of the following locations for busing information, early dismissals and school closings. Decisions are based on the safety of the students.

Other Emergency Situations

Tornado season is upon us! Here are some tips to protect yourself from tornado dangers.

Stay tuned for storm warnings.

Tune in to local media for storm information. Know the difference between a tornado WATCH and a tornado WARNING.

A tornado WATCH means that conditions right for a tornado to form.
A tornado WARNING means that a tornado has been sighted and could be heading to your area.

If a tornado threatens…

If you are in a house or small building, go to the basement. If there is no basement, go to an interior room on the lowest floor. Pick a place ahead of time where you will be protected from glass and other flying debris.
If you are outside, quickly seek shelter in the basement of a nearby sturdy building or lie flat in a ditch or low-lying area.
If you are in a car or mobile home, GET OUT and seek shelter in the basement of a sturdy building or lie flat in a ditch low lying area AWAY from your car or mobile home.

After the tornado passes…

Watch for fallen power lines and stay out of any damaged areas.
Listen to the radio for information and instructions.
Use a flashlight to inspect your home for damage.
DO NOT use candles at any time.
